Pugin's Birthday Party

Written and produced by Clive Holland and Suzy Humphries

Pugin had a connection with Ramsgate initially through his aunt Selina who lived in the town. In 1839 Pugin moved here, designed and built his house, The Grange, his church, St Augustine’s – and designed St Augustines Abbey also in the town but sadly he died before it was completed. Pugin died in September 1852 – he was forty years old.

An event which celebrated Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin’s 200th birthday – sadly Pugin himself was unable to attend. It was the launchpad for not only a year-long celebration of Pugin’s life here in Ramsgate and beyond but also for Mischievous Theatre’s new project – to create a multi-media performance based on the extraordinary life of AWN Pugin. We had Victorian themed food, cake, some live theatre, film, pass the parcel, some singing with the ultra talented The Indigo Quartet – and a talk by Rosemary Hill, the author of “God’s Architect”, a biography of this amazing man.
