The Showman's Odyssey (working title)

Written by Clive Holland and Dan Thompson. Performed by Clive Holland.

With a cardboard suitcase, an ancient hat and a head full of stories … some true … and some not so, the Showman travels the highways and byways of England. No-one knows much about him. He says he was hatched from an egg, that he fell to earth, that he washed up on the shore, grew from a seed or was hewn from rock. He can see the whole world in a drop of water, a tear, a bead of sweat … and yet he can’t quite understand the concept of home. What is it? Is it just a place? Is it a feeling? An emotion? A refuge? Does everyone have one? Should he have one? Maybe he’ll find the answers here!

This unlikely and adventurous journey across England, stopping here and there and finding Englishness in unexpected places, is based on the poems of Dan Thompson from his collection “Your England”. This work-in-progress performance is a co-production between Mischievous Theatre CIC and Dan Thompson Studios.

Following the performance, which will be roughly 1 hour (or less), there will be a chance to sit and chat upstairs in the bar. It will be great to hear what people think about the show. This “first-step-performance” is very much a tiptoeing towards what might be.

It is an experiment, a shot in the dark, something completely new and I am hoping that as many of you amazing creative people could come and support this. I am definitely looking for your thoughts, ideas and criticism (I am sorry that you have to pay for that privilege but needs must). If, once the performance dust has settled, we still think that there is a show here, then it will move to the next stage. Looking forward to seeing you all.
